My heart was made heavy upon hearing the news that Chamonix legend, Tof Henry and Chilean IFMGA mountain guide Juan Senoret passed away last Wednesday, October 11th, 2023. The two men were attempting to ski from the summit of the Putiagudo Volcano in the Los Lagos region in Chile.
Just five days before the incident, Tof crafted a post on his Instagram outlining his journey to South America and reporting on the less-than-optimal conditions on Putiagudo preceding his and Senoret’s ascent. It is understood at this point that Henry and Senoret fell off a cliff on the volcano’s north face; however, whether this was a fatal crash or not is still unknown. Details regarding this accident remain unclear, however more information continues to roll out by the hour.
Tof was a beloved and widely respected member of the ski community in France. In his career he descended some of the steepest and most consequential lines in the Chamonix region and made a name for himself with the blistering speeds at which he would crush these high-octane lines. His elated disposition spread joy and stoke to all who were lucky enough to call Tof a friend or to see him on the slopes. His loss will be felt in the ski community for years to come.
Juan Senoret was also a legend in his own right. He was considered one of the best mountaineers in Chile, and his dedication to ski exploration in South America was admirable.
